    Beijing: The Next Design City

Just like the economic prosperity of China called forth the birth of the now famous Ming Dynasty furniture in the 18th century, China, after rising to the world’s second largest economy in 2008, is awaiting the explosion of a spectacular new round of design revolution. China’s Central Government is striving to boost domestic demand and to nurture a better domestic market, so that the nation’s current economic policy—which relies on export and low-cost labour—will have less impact on China’s design industry.

Meanwhile, design and innovation receive more energetic impulse than before, thanks to the advancing of the urbanisation process, the drastic increase of architecture space, a growing middle class, and the growing international communication. In China, the stage of competition for the next Design City, one with international influence, is set for the two mega cities: Shanghai and Beijing. Apparently, as China’s center of politics and culture, Beijing has more advantages than Shanghai; despite being China’s most-commercialised metropolis, Shanghai suffers from the homogeneity of value due to its over-anxiousness to become more internationalised. Beijing, on the other hand, keeps its extremely strong force of traditions and multiple value standards in the process of globalisation. The city of Beijing hosts the country’s Central Government and represents China’s sovereignty. Compared to the once-colonised Shanghai, it still has much conviction of preserving local culture after the ‘right of passage’ brought forth by the advanced design and technologies of the 2008 Olympics.

Innovation and design will only happen in a culture where multiple values and conflicts coexist, not a city in which a certain design fad prevails and trumps everything else. Therefore, I’m expecting a new kind of design combining local and global styles be born in Beijing, and, consequently, rewrite the history of design.
